It’s worth noting that “new age = crap” was not always a given. The roots of one branch of the genre can be traced to the same place as allegedly more “progressive” electronic music: Germany in the 1970s. New age with an electronic bent was an outgrowth of spacy Kosmische Musik, what we typically call “Krautrock.” Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel and Cluster continue to have some of their records filed under new age, and in their heyday, they all at least grudgingly acknowledged the appropriateness of the term for what they were doing.
